This is a very large-format precision painting of the Spring (or Lilies) Fresco's West Wall Swallows Scene. The entire fresco covers three walls of Room 2, a ground floor room, in the Delta Complex of the archaeological site of Akrotiri on the southern coast of the island of Santorini (Thera) in Greece. Except for the cave art of the Paleolithic to the best of my knowledge this fresco is the first and most ancient representation of landscape or nature art known to us. Uniquely it's one continuous work of art that spans the south, west, and north walls of Room 2 in a surround effect for the observer. This is the largest painting of its kind I've ever undertaken.
Spyridon Marinatos' team was able to unearth the fresco in 1970 which was covered by pumice and ash from the incredibly massive eruption of the island's marine volcano. The great eruption occurred in about 1613 BC and apparently weakened the Minoans on Crete to such an extent the Mycenaeans were able to invade and conquer them a few (unknown) decades later. The fresco is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in Greece.
